About Me

Short CV

I, Hanna Biedermann, began my professional career as a certified movement educator. Since 1999, I have been working as a calligrapher. My first encounter with calligraphy took place in 1986 during a stay abroad in England. At that time, I could not have imagined that this would be the beginning of a passion that continues to this day.

This marked the beginning of my path of training and further education. After returning to Switzerland, I attended courses in Basel for many years, initially in traditional calligraphy. There I acquired a broad foundation in various historical scripts. It was fascinating to learn the proper use of the pointed nib: to develop a feel for the movement of the pen and to observe the finesse with which it is possible to create both strong strokes and delicate lines on a sheet of paper with the same nib.

Gradually, I became familiar with different writing tools, each offering its own unique possibilities and encouraging further experimentation. In this way, the transition to experimental calligraphy was smooth – a field whose diversity knows no limits. In addition, I took part several times in the annual week-long workshops at a monastery in Ticino.

In 1995, I became a member of the Swiss Calligraphic Society. In the 1990s, I spent several years in the USA. There, I became a member of two calligraphic societies, those of Delaware and Philadelphia. The exchange with American calligraphers, joint exhibitions in Wilmington and Philadelphia, and workshops at the Philadelphia Art College with Sheryl Hirsch, Carl Rohrs, and Nick D’Aquanno were all part of a formative period of training.

Back in Switzerland, I continued my education and training both at home and abroad with national and international calligraphers, including Andreas Schenk (CH), Katharina Pieper (D), Denise Lach (F), Klaus Peter Schäffel (CH), Thomas Ingmire (USA), Brody Neuenschwander (Belgium), and Denis Brown (Ireland).

My calligraphic works have been shown in solo and group exhibitions in the USA and Switzerland since 1996. Since 1999, I have been teaching ongoing calligraphy courses.

There is currently an interview on the ProntoPro blog (Interview https://www.prontopro.ch/de/),In which I had the opportunity to speak about my wonderful profession. Thank you very much for the publication!
